Linode turns 16: Triples Dedicated plan storage, halves NodeBalancer cost

June 19, 2019 2:00 pm

This week we’re celebrating Linode’s 16th birthday and we want you to celebrate with us. Like we’ve done in the past we’re using our birthday to also celebrate you. Here’s what we’ve got in store:

NodeBalancer pricing reduction

Starting today, NodeBalancer pricing has been reduced from $20/mo to $10/mo, for both new and existing NodeBalancers. If you’re currently using NB’s there’s nothing you need to do to receive the new pricing. It’s automatic.

If you’re not using them, NodeBalancers are highly-available, managed, cloud based, “load balancers as a service” and you can read more about them here.

Dedicated Instances storage increase

We’re simplifying our plan matrix by matching storage between our Shared and Dedicated Linode plans – specifically by upping the storage space on the dedicated plans to match the shared. If you weren’t aware, you can easily resize a Linode not just up or down, but across plan types as well. This storage increase will make life easier when you want to resize a Standard Linode into a Dedicated one, for example.

This applies to both new and existing Dedicated Linodes. If you have a dedicated Linode you can simply resize your disk to take advantage of the new storage space.

Dedicated instances are optimized for workloads where consistent performance is required or where full-duty work (100% CPU all day, every day) needs doing. This includes build boxes, CI/CD, video encoding, machine learning, game servers, databases, data mining, and busy application servers.

What’s coming next?

We’ve got more good stuff on the horizon, including:

From all of us at Linode, we thank you for your business and support!

Enjoy!

  1. I wonder if by this time next year, with EPYC 2, may be we could see the dedicated plan having 1:1 RAM to CPU Ratio? At the moment it is 2GB RAM and 1vCPU / Thread.

Also wondering if there are any plan on managed databases?

And what happened to the Limestone CDN?

  2. Ed: Your request for Dedicated plans with 1:1 RAM to CPU Ratio has been added to our internal tracker — thanks for the suggestion. Otherwise, a managed database service is still on our roadmap with no ETA to announce at the moment.

Regarding CDN integration, we’ve partnered with Limelight, so if you’re interested in CDN services please reach out to us directly and we’ll be happy to see what we can offer you.

  3. I am waiting for firewall service

  4. Hi there – we’ve had a lot of requests for this which we’ve been tracking, and I’ve added yours as well. Thanks for letting us know!

  5. Good job guys ! Congrats with your 16 birthday ! XO – Danielle

  6. Are there any plans for high performance compute instances for a small premium over the standard plans? Say, $12 a month for 2GB of ram and 1 cpu core at 3.8GHz with 64GB of storage. It would be nice to get extra cpu performance on plans less expensive than $30 a month.

  7. And plan for the truly private network and firewall service?

  8. fiveofeight: Faster CPUs is something we can look into. I’ve added it to our feature request tracker for review. Thanks for the suggestion!

  9. David: Those are both great ideas, and we’re looking into them. I’ve made sure your request has been noted to both the fully private networking and cloud firewall ideas on our internal tracker. We love hearing about what you’d like to see next, thanks for sharing!

  10. This is an amazing update, and I’ve just started looking at a NodeBalancer as it’s now fits into my budget a bit easier 🙂

I’d also like to add a request for a managed firewall service, akin to DO’s Cloud Firewalls.

  11. Andy: Glad to hear that! Your firewall service request has been noted — let us know if there’s anything else you’d like to see.

  12. Hmm, that object storage bandwidth is twice as expensive as it is on your closest competitor there (Spaces CDN), $20/TB instead of $10/TB ! Is there a reason for this? Maybe significantly better performance?

  13. Or are we supposed to predict how much bandwidth we will need in the following month and automatically purchase the correct number of unused $5 linodes to increase our bandwidth allowance at $5/TB? This seems awfully overcomplicated.

  14. John: Thanks for pointing this out. We’re taking a look at ways we can improve the pricing structure of Object Storage prior to its official release. We’d love to hear any other suggestions you might have here or via email at objbeta@linode.com.

  15. Also does your object storage come with an included (no extra costs) CDN service like Spaces CDN?

And do you support hiding it behind Cloudflare (on a custom domain, accessed over https) *without* the unaffordable host rewriting feature?

  16. John: It’s not included at the moment, though we are considering including a CDN service in the future.

As for “hiding it behind Cloudflare (on a custom domain, accessed over https)”, this is not supported currently, though I’ve added your request for this to our internal tracker. If you have any additional feature requests or feedback regarding Object Storage, let us know!

  17. Hello,

Congrats! for being 16 with such great success in web hosting industry.
